Jonathan is a highly experienced lawyer qualified to practise in England & Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Australia. He has enjoyed extensive and varied experience in complex and high value litigation acting predominantly on behalf of defendants whilst in private practice at the London Bar at Quadrant Chambers, London, in house, and at commercial firms in London and Bristol.
He is a qualified Mediator and Arbitrator, with a broad and varied litigation skillset. He has enjoyed experience in most areas of commercial practice with a particular focus in the areas of Construction (cladding claims; general building disputes; onshore and offshore energy; waste to energy and major projects); Energy & Natural Resources; Transport; Professional Indemnity; Banking, Fraud and Financial Services and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Notable Cases:
- Construction: Energy Works (Hull) Ltd v MW High Tech Projects UK Ltd and others [2020] EWHC 2537 (TCC), O’Farrell J - Assignment of an IChemE sub-contract from the contractor to the employer on termination of the main contract transferred the benefit of all accrued and future rights, leaving the contractor with no contractual claim against the sub-contractor.
- Construction: Advising and defending design and build main contractor on “cladding” and internal fire-stopping dispute in relation to design and fitting of Alucobond panels and intumescent paint/lining applications (anonymity preserved).
- Construction: Advising and assisting on construction dispute (mainly on power issues) in relation to completion of data-handling centre in the Republic of Ireland (including assisting on appeal of adjudication issues) (anonymity preserved).
- Construction/Transport: GSP Fortuna Ltd v Dean International Trading SA [2014] EWHC 2208 (Comm) – Junior to William Flenley QC (Hailsham Chambers) UAE oil rigs purchase and upgrade arrangement involving sanctions issues involving Iran and other jurisdictions including tracing monies through such jurisdictions.
- Collins v Lawrence [2017] 1 Lloyd’s Rep 13 (see also [2017] EWCA Civ 2268 – permission to appeal refused) Represented successful Defendant in case involving first judicial examination of the meaning of “disembarkation” and the temporal width of the application of the Athens Convention and the 2-year time-bar applicable thereunder as opposed to the normal 3-year time-bar for personal injury.
