James Hutchinson

Partner

James joined Beale & Co in 2001 having completed the LPC at the College of Law, London as part of his training to be a solicitor. In the same year, he was awarded the Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran prize by the British & Irish Law, Education Technology Association for his paper on IT law.

James returned to Beale & Co after working in the Corporate Finance team of Pinsent Masons. Whilst at Pinsent Masons, he advised a FTSE 250 listed contractor on its £247 million recommended offer for a Norwegian drilling rig owner and operator.

James now specialises in a range of corporate work including acquisitions and sales of businesses, management buyouts/buyins, company formations, shareholders agreements and IT/IP agreements. He has a particular interest in Internet law and regulation and advises a number of popular websites.

James also has extensive experience of acting for insurers and defending professional negligence claims against solicitors, accountants and IT professionals arising out of complex corporate and commercial transactions. He recently successfully defended a top 15 firm of solicitors involving a multi-million pound private finance initiative. James’s experience also includes the defence of D&O related claims, for example in relation to unlawful dividends, transactions at an undervalue and breaches of the Companies Act 2006.

James is recommended in the Legal 500 2009 for corporate and commercial work.

James is a member of the Securities & Investment Institute, the City of London Law Society, the Society for Computers and Law and the British Israel Law Association.
