Jason Bird - Second Year Trainee, London

Jason Bird

During your second year of training at Beales you will be required to deal directly with clients, assisting in the management of cases from their inception up to trial and liaising with insurers and Counsel. At the end of your training contract, you will qualify as a practising lawyer in England and Wales and this is exactly what the firm aims to prepare you for.

The second year training at Beales is geared to prepare you for life as a NQ (Newly Qualified). During your two final seats of your training contract you will build on your specialist skills in the areas of construction and insurance whilst working on complex and often multi-jurisdictional matters, engaging in business development initiatives and continuing your professional development.

As part of your training, you may be offered the opportunity to go on secondment at one of our clients or to our Dubai office. The purpose of going on secondment to our clients is to provide specialist legal support and to learn about how the legal advice we give shapes and influences the clients’ business.

I was fortunate to have the chance to go on a mini-secondment to the Dubai office, which is headed up by partner Claire Miller. During my time in Dubai, I engaged in a wide range of work in preparation for multiple international arbitrations across the construction and infrastructure sectors. The work I undertook in Dubai was similar to the type of work I was doing in London which allowed me to build upon my knowledge and skills, but also to appreciate the interplay between UAE law and English law. One of the highlights of my mini-secondment in Dubai was drafting witness statements in response to a multi-million dollar arbitration claim against one of our UAE-based contractor clients. I was made to feel a very valuable member of the team and my confidence in my abilities certainly increased during my secondment. My advice to trainees who go to Dubai is enjoy their secondment, learn and adapt to the culture in Dubai and of course, make the most of the stunning weather!
